Los Angeles Country Club member Brad
Shaw used his home-course advantage wisely
to win the inaugural George C. Thomas Invitational on the North Course. Shaw survived a
final-round 75 to post 1-over-par 212 to win by
a shot over Bob Gerwin and Brian Norton.
Shaw ran into difficulty on the par- 3 15th,
which played 90 yards in the final round.
Unsure if his ball moved as he addressed a
putt, he called a penalty on himself and made
double-bogey. He came to the final hole with
a two-shot lead, and his bogey on 18 cut the
winning margin to one. The demonic 15th hole
averaged 3. 13 strokes in the final round.
Senior stalwart Chip Lutz cruised to an
eight-shot win over the trio of Brady Exber,
George Zahringer and Bob Kain. Lutz, who took
a four-shot lead into the final round,
shot 3-under-par 209. Exber
might have made it interesting
had he not been hit with a four-
shot penalty on the 11th hole of
the first round; his
caddie provided
him the wrong
ball to putt
on the green,
and then he mis-
takenly substituted his
original ball back
into play.
Utilizing
the Thomas
“course within
design philosophy, par for each day for the mid-amateurs was 70-71-70 (211); for the seniors, it
was 70-72-70 (212).
