If you’re an American and a partisan,
you’re wondering right now how all those
fancy-schmancy cups – Ryder, Solheim,
Walker and, now, Curtis – have found their
way to the wrong side of the pond.
If you’re European, you’re celebrating.
That’s because the best amateur
women golfers from GB&I rallied Sunday
to defeat the Yanks in Scotland. Adding
injury to the insult, the U.S. captain, Pat
Cornett, suffered a broken leg Friday in a
freak cart accident at the course.
The good news for the Yanks on the
team beat is the resurgence of Dustin
Johnson, who was supposed to be a Ryder
Cup stalwart. Until he wasn’t.
Johnson resurfaced Sunday in Memphis
where he got hot late at the FedEx St. Jude
Classic and won for the sixth time in the
States. No other player in his 20s has that
many wins.
If Johnson’s form holds, captain Davis
Love III will have to find him a spot on his
Ryder Cup team at Medinah, a big ballpark
made for big hitters like DJ. Meanwhile,
who ever thought Johnson and Tiger Woods
would be candidates for Comeback Player
of the Year?
On the LPGA, congrats to Shanshan
Feng for winning her first major. And watch
out for Lee Westwood at this week’s U.S.
Open. He destroyed a Euro field in Sweden.
One final note: Because Spencer Levin
got into the U.S. Open by jumping to No. 60
in the OWGR this week, amateur phenom
Jordan Spieth got bumped from the field
at The Olympic Club.
