East Defends Wyndham Cup
ORLANDO | Make or miss, Cody Proveaux’s 10-
foot par putt on No. 18 in the final match was going to decide the fate of the 2012 Wyndham Cup.
The uphill putt was center-cut the whole way, and
the par secured the Cup-clinching half-point for
the East, as the 25-25 tie kept the Cup east of the
Mississippi River for the second consecutive year.
The West led 15½- 14½ entering Thursday’s 20
singles matches at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club
That put the spotlight squarely on Prove-
aux and Dalke, who also played each other in
singles during the 2011 Wyndham Cup (Prove-
aux won, 2 and 1).
Facing a 1-down deficit on No. 18, Proveaux
was the first to hit his approach into the same
back-right hole location the PGA Tour uses
during the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He flew
his second shot into the back bunker, while
Dalke played safely to the left side of the green.
After Dalke’s 45-foot birdie putt rolled 12 feet
past the hole, Proveaux nestled his downhill,
down-grain bunker shot to 10 feet. With both
players facing par putts, the scene was set: if just
one player made his putt, his team won the Cup.

ing low, which meant Proveaux’s putt would be
the last of the 2012 Wyndham Cup. When it found
the bottom of the cup, 19 players donned in red
rushed the green, as Proveaux’s halve secured
the half-point the East needed to retain the Cup.
“I think that was the most nervous I’ve
ever been over any golf shot,” Proveaux said.
“It started on 16 tee. I was shaking and trying
to hold my golf ball just to make sure I’d quit
shaking before I hit a putt.”
The Wyndham Cup marks the end of Prove-
aux’s AJGA career before he begins at Clemson
in the fall. The reigning Rolex Junior Player of
the Year finished with a career Wyndham Cup
record of 5-3-1.
“I couldn’t go out with a better season than
this,” he said. “My last junior putt of my career
and I made it to win the Wyndham Cup. It was a
huge event and I think very highly of this event.”
Conducted by the American Junior Golf As-
sociation, Wyndham Cup is a team match play
competition that features five sessions: four-ball,
mixed four-ball, foursomes, mixed foursomes
and singles. The 25-25 tie was just the second
deadlock in the tournament’s 23-year history; the
squads also tied in 1998 at Serrano Country Club.
