The new Yes! Callie 12 features
the TPU65D insert for better
feel and forgiveness.
Finding A Groove
BY JOHN STEINBREDER
Yes! introduced 17 new putter models at the
2012 PGA Merchandise Show, and a couple of
them have attracted a fair amount of attention
this year. One is the Sandy 12, a mallet-style
stick with a new TPU65D insert placed in a
precision milled slot behind the face, for better
feel and forgiveness. It is also available with
a high-contrast black and white finish on the
face, to help aiming.
Ryan Moore shot 61 in the second round of
the Humana Challenge in late January the first
time he ever picked up a Sandy 12. He seemed
to make everything he looked at that day and
needed only nine putts on his final nine holes.
A few months later, Fred Funk used a Sandy
12 to birdie four of the last five holes of the
Insperity Championship at The Woodlands in
Houston, and beat Tom Lehman by a stroke in
that Champions Tour event.
As is the case with all Yes! models, the
Sandy 12 employs the C-Groove design that
has been a hallmark of that brand for years.
According to Blair Philip, director of product
development for putters at Adams Golf, which
owns Yes!, the edges of those grooves are
lathed into the putter face at specific angles in
the shape of a C. Those grooves grip the ball
at impact, he adds, and help it start rolling
sooner and truer toward the hole, end over
end and on one axis. The overspin helps the
ball track better.
The other new Yes! putter
of note this year is the
Callie 12. Though it
hasn’t enjoyed similar
success as the Sandy
12 on Tour, it has been
well received at retail
and boasts comparable performance
attributes, utilizing the
same C-Groove design
and also the TPU65D
insert. The big difference is that the
Callie is a perimeter-weighted blade. l
