Seeking Its
Own Level
Not that long ago R&A boss Peter Dawson
revealed a well-kept secret to The Post: The
Brits, he said, don’t really mind if the Yanks call
their “Open Championship” the “British Open.”
No need to stand on ceremony. But bring
your waterproofs if you’re heading to England
this week for the world’s oldest major. Hard
rain, hidden bunkers and deep hay are all
in the forecast. In other words, water, water
everywhere but not a place to drop.
By the way – in case you were wondering
or cared – the crunchers who run the
numbers at the Official World Golf Ranking
headquarters have confirmed that a victory
by betting favorite Tiger Woods at Lytham
will restore him to the No. 1 spot he last
surrendered Oct. 31, 2010.
Meanwhile, in Michigan, somebody named
Roger Chapman won the U.S. Senior Open,
his second major triumph of the year, beating
a whole bunch of famous guys named Freddie,
Bernhard, Corey, Calc, Tom and a professional
caddie nicknamed “Last Call Lance.”
Another professional caddie, Damon
Green, fired a closing 68 in the same event
for a back-door top 20 and then presumably
watched nervously on TV as his day-job boss,
Zach Johnson, beat Troy Matteson in a watery
two-hole playoff at the John Deere Classic.
Finally, this one apparently was just too
wincingly hard to resist for the headline writer
who combined Jeev Milkha Singh’s Sunday
win at the Scottish Open with the spot it got
him in the field at stormy Lytham. The result:
“Singh In: In The Rain”
