Lewis Reveals Cancer Diagnosis
Two-time PGA Tour winner J.L. Lewis
withdrew from the Regions Tradition on Saturday,
announcing he has been diagnosed with a form
of bone marrow cancer.
The news first turned up on
Lewis’ Twitter.
Lewis and his wife, Dawn, run
his Twitter account. “The condition
is treatable and the (doctor) feels he
can get back to health & playing golf
in the future,” Dawn Lewis tweeted.
“Keep JL in your prayers. We appre-
ciate the love & support!”
Lewis will be 52 in July. His best tournament
in 2012 was a tie for 15th.

the final group was in early July, 2011 when Jeff
Sluman rallied to win the Nature Valley First Tee
Open at Pebble Beach. Jeff Sluman was in the
third-to-last grouping going into the final round.
The top three players in the first round were
all using their sons as caddies. Glasson had
Max Glasson on the bag. Tommy Forsman was
looping for father Dan Forsman and Taylor
Funk was toting for his father, Fred.
At the halfway mark, Bill Glasson was fighting tradition at the Regions Tradition.
No 36-hole leader has gone on to win the
Regions Tradition since 2003 when Tom Watson
enjoyed a four-stroke lead through two rounds
after carding a 10-under 62 on Friday. Watson actually trailed Jim Ahern by one stroke after three
rounds but rebounded to win on Sunday by one.
Glasson wound up five back of winner Tom
Lehman.
Of the 21 Regions Traditions that have gone 72
holes, only nine have been won by the leader/co-leader after 54 holes. Fred Funk was the 54-hole
leader in 2008, and Mark McNulty, the 2007 champion, was a co-leader after three rounds in 2007.
Peter Senior has to feel a little frustrated
after two close calls in Birmingham the last two
years. The Australian native played 54 holes of
bogey-free golf in 2010 and finished T2 behind
Forsman in the Regions Charity Classic and then
fell in a two-hole playoff to Lehman a year ago.
A Sunday 74 dropped Senior from second to
a tie for 11th.
Would Sunday’s winners come from the final
group? It would.
The odds were working in that favor since
the winner of the last 20 Champions Tour
events has come from the final group.
The last time the winner did not come from
It was 35 years ago on Sunday that Al Gei-
berger became the first player to break 60 in a
PGA TOUR event when he shot 59 in the second
round of the Danny Thomas Memphis Classic. l
