Colonial winner Zach Johnson
One man’s “cheek” is another man’s
bulletin board fodder.
Venerable British swing coach Pete
Cowen publicly proclaimed last week that
Europe could field a “B” team that would beat
America’s best at the Ryder Cup in September.
“No,” a deadly-serious Cowen said when
asked upon follow-up. “I wasn’t joking.”

Euro captain Jose Maria Olazabal’s wince
was almost audible. And U.S. captain Davis
Love III got a free opportunity to stake out the
underdog high ground.
Luke Donald, at Wentworth, successfully
defended a title for the first time in his
career, received a lifetime membership to the
European Tour and regained his No. 1 in the
world rankings.
The local media called his week a “coronation.”
Erstwhile No. 1 Rory McIlroy has now
missed two straight cuts, shooting a 76 at The
Players and a 79 at Wentworth.
The critical buzz is that he’s been jetting
about too much for the sake of his relationship
with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki, and that
his golf has suffered.
Speaking of running out of gas, Jason
Dufner, the world’s hottest player in May,
finally came up empty late at Colonial Sunday.
Zach Johnson, ever the terrier, was there to
pick up the pieces and his second win in three
years at Hogan’s Alley.
Johnson’s one-shot margin of victory would
have been three but for a two-shot penalty
on the 72nd hole incurred when he failed to
replace his ball marker that he had moved to
get out of Dufner’s line.
