Beman said. “But I couldn’t have imag-
ined how the community would grow
and change as a result of the Tour and
the tournament being here.”
Today, the rectangle from south
Jacksonville to St. Augustine from I-95
to the Atlantic is awash with upscale
development, high-tech business, and
golf, none of which existed before the
Tour and its tournament.
“If you think about it, Augusta,
Georgia didn’t grow because of The
Masters,” Beman said. “The tourna-
ment grew but the town didn’t. Because
(The Players Championship) was so
successful, and because it brought
such great worldwide attention to the
region, I firmly believe that was one of
the big factors that contributed to the
Mayo Clinic coming (to Ponte Vedra).
And the Mayo Clinic, and the Tour, and
the tournament all contributed to the
NFL choosing Jacksonville as one of
the expansion cities for the Jaguars.
