For decades, the black caddies at Augusta
National Golf Club – required by the club’s rules
and treasured for their nuanced knowledge of
the course’s topography – stood as a striking
symbol of the sport’s segregated state. “As long
as I’m alive,” said Clifford Roberts, one of the
club’s founders in 1933 and a longtime Masters
chairman, “all the golfers will be white and all
the caddies will be black.” In 1997, 20 years after
Roberts’ death, Tiger Woods, with a white caddie, won the first of his four Masters titles, shattering the mirror that Roberts’ vision reflected.

ALLISS BEMOANS BBC DEMISE
Peter Alliss was determined to enjoy this
year’s Masters, because he doesn’t know how
many more on which he will be commentat-
ing. Blessedly, that isn’t because the evergreen
Golf’s beginnings have always been a conten-
tious issue and a recent find at a Swedish
archaeological dig may muddy the waters
further. A team explor-
ing the town of Sigtuna,
north of Stockholm,
unearthed an iron
implement which bears a
striking resemblance to
a golf club. Interestingly,
the area where the item
was found was seem-
ingly well cleared and
featured what appeared
to be a hole. While no
one is yet claiming definitive proof of the exis-
tence of golf in Viking times, respected Swedish
archaeologist Anders Wikström says the pos-
sibility does exist.

VIDEO ABOUT
THE DISCOVERY
“I compare Erin Hills to some of the great U.S. Open sites, like Shinnecock, like
Pebble Beach, like Oakmont. This stands up with all of them. I really believe that.”
– MIKE DAVIS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, USGA
THE OTHER WOODS
In San Jose, Calif., last week, Kevin Woods
sat in his wheelchair a few feet from his television, watching his half-brother Tiger play The
Masters. He has to. He can’t see otherwise.
Can’t stand much lately, either. Can barely use
his left arm at all. He can sense his hands and
feet going a little more numb every day. Kevin
was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2009,
and it’s not getting better. “I’d say 60 to 70
percent worse now,” says Kevin’s brother, Earl
Woods Jr. “He’s not going to be able to keep
his house much longer.” All three men had the
same father, Earl Woods, but Earl Jr. says they
haven’t heard from Tiger since they buried Earl’s
ashes in Kansas six years ago. l
