He refused to entertain any
questions about why there are
no women members at his club
but looked shaken and not a
little stirred by the avalanche
intensity of support for women
from the mostly male press
pack. “What would he say to his
granddaughters as to why they
can’t be members at his club?”
Nice try from a New York Times
female reporter. Nice try but
no enlightening response.
But there was lightning
riposte – and thunder – as the
Par- 3 Contest was abandoned
before the patrons even had a
chance to swoon over the Royal
three-ball of Nicklaus, Palmer
and Player. Padraig Harrington
and Jonathan Byrd were declared joint winners at 5-under
par, ensuring that neither of
them will win the tournament as
the jinx claims its 2012 victims.
A nee-nar nee-nar alarm
echoed across Augusta
National, indicating that either
there was a storm in the area
and everyone should get the
heck indoors, or perhaps
someone had been discovered
using a cellphone on site. The
Augusta elves were hard at
work as night fell repairing
the storm damage to ensure
everything looks spit spot for
Round One. It always does.
