“If you’re ready to play among the profes-
sionals, you’re ready,” she commented. “I think
that girls develop sooner than boys – boys carry
on growing for longer – and I don’t think anyone
needs a Plan B any more. In fact, you have to ask
yourself if the players who feel they need one are
thinking, deep down, that they aren’t going to make
it. If they are, that’s an ominous way to start.”
Much though Stupples admires a player like
Wie, who has combined professional golf with
university, Stupples doubts whether there are too
many who have what it takes to go down that route.
“When you’re studying, you’ll be thinking you
should be practising, and when you’re practising,
you’ll be thinking you should be studying,” she said.
Stupples suspects that two years at college
would be a good compromise. “At least to my
way of thinking, that’s enough. A girl can learn
to become independent in that time, which is
the main lesson she needs.”
They followed an interesting Singaporean
tradition at a pre-tournament conference involv-
ing Karrie Webb, Tseng, Pettersen and Wie.
