African heat, has explained how, for the purpos-
es of this year’s Ryder Cup, players will be tak-
ing delivery of their shoes three or four weeks
ahead of time. He mentioned that this went
back to a Ryder Cup of recent vintage when the
players were given their shoes at the start of the
week and ended up “playing with feet in mind.”
For Ryder Cup purposes, the golfers can now
choose their own make of shoes, the only stipu-
lation being that they are the requisite colour.
Matteo Manassero
, who is still only 18, did
nothing to write home about at the Volvo Cham-
pions, finishing 23rd out of the field of 35 in a
week when he could not putt.
He was tempted to dismiss the new putter,
a Scotty Cameron Laguna 15, he had picked up
over the Christmas break, but his coach,
Alberto
Binaghi
, begged him to think twice. “The putts
may not have gone in but the putter looked as if it
could have been made for you,” said Binaghi.
Manassero opened with a 73 in Abu Dhabi be-
fore following up with a 7-under-par 65 in which
he had a frugal 21 putts. “He was holing them
from everywhere and it was getting to the point
where he was embarrassed,” said his caddie.
The teenager made a handful of seven-to-
eight-footers and five putts of 20 and 30 feet.
“It’s great to be in contention again,” said
Manassero, who finished T6. His second win on
Tour was in last April’s Malaysian Open.
Zack Rasegas
, once Caddie of the Year on a
caddie programme set up by
Gary Player
at Sun
City, was on
Louis Oosthuizen
’s bag as the South
African won the 2010 Open Championship. The
only thing to dampen the experience for the bag-
Robert Karlsson
, who used to have a series
of pretty wacky ideas on how to improve his golf
– he once grew his own breakfast cereal in hotel
basins – is nowadays entirely straightforward.
He has, though, been doing yoga since the
Nedbank Challenge, with his instructor the
spouse of
Dale Richardson
, the chiropractor.
“After 20 years on Tour,” said the 42-year-old
Karlsson, “you have to work a bit harder at stay-
ing supple, flexible and injury-free.” l
