The Annika Invitational crowned its fourth
champion on Monday, when Alison Lee, of
Valencia, Calif., completed her third consecutive round of 1-under-par 71 for a 3-under total
and a four-shot victory over Shannon Aubert, of
Reunion, Fla.
Lee, who was tied for the second-round lead
with Samantha Wagner, of Windermere, Fla.,
pulled away from the field on the back nine of
the final round with birdies on holes 11-13 at the
Watson Course in Reunion, Fla.
A four-time, first-team Rolex Junior All-American, Lee started the Annika Invitational
with four career victories but was still in search
of her first invitational crown. She had notched
three runner-up finishes at AJGA invitationals
before finally breaking through with a win.
“I played in my first Invitational when I was
13, so I’ve had a lot of chances,” Lee said. “I’ve
finished second many times and fifth a lot. The
difference in winning and getting second place is
just a whole new feeling. It really means a lot.”
Lee, who was ranked No. 6 in the Polo
Golf Rankings at the time of the win, has now
climbed to No. 3. With the move, the 16-year-old
has set a lofty new goal.
“Hopefully, this year I can win a couple more
and my goal is to be the Rolex Junior Player of the
Year,” she said. “So, when I get home, I’m just going to grind, grind, grind and try to get better.”
