The Jones Cup Junior Invitational, following
in the footsteps of the annual Jones Cup Invitational and vastly growing in national prominence, will be held Dec. 18-20 at Sea Island’s
Seaside Course in Georgia.
The third annual Jones Cup Junior Invitational will feature the nation’s top male junior
golfers. The winner of the 54-hole, stroke-play
competition will receive an exemption to participate in the prestigious Jones Cup Invitational,
which is scheduled at Sea Island’s Ocean Forest
Golf Club course Feb. 2-5, 2012.
Hosting the event and promoting junior golf
is a cornerstone of the Sea Island golf family,
which has supported amateur golf for more
than 80 years. In recent history, Sea Island
hosted the 2001 Walker Cup, seven USGA
championships and seven Jones Cup Invitationals. The Seaside Course, located on the southern tip of St. Simons Island, plays host to the
PGA Tour’s McGladrey Classic each October.

AJGA JUNIOR ALL STARS SHINE
Six years before he was named the PGA Tour’s
Rookie of the Year, Rickie Fowler was identified as
a rising star by being named to the AJGA’s Gary
Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Team. Now
in its 10th year, the 2011 team includes 20 players
from nine states and Canada.
Specifically designed for boys and girls ages
12-15, the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Series presents opportunities for younger
players to develop their skills and earn entry into
AJGA Open tournaments. The team of 20 players
will be honored Friday, Oct. 7.
Nineteen of the 20 players on the team won a
Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star event
during the 2011 season. Austin Connelly, of Las
Colinas, Tex., is the only player to win twice, while
Edwin Yi, of Beaumont, Calif., earned a spot on
the team by posting a pair of runner-up finishes.
In addition to Fowler, former members of the
Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Team
include Peter Uihlein (2004), Bud Cauley (2005),
Brianna Do (2004), Vicky Hurst (2005) and Cheyenne Woods (2005). l
