Two months ago, Harold Varner made history when he became the first
African-American to win the North Carolina Amateur. One week later, he
one-upped himself by winning the North Carolina Match Play Championship, becoming the first player to win both the stroke and match play titles in
the same year. Varner, a senior at East Carolina University and No. 35 in the
World Amateur Golf Ranking, also made history for the Pirates last year when
he set the single-season record for lowest stroke average (71.25). In all, he
has 11 top- 10 finishes at ECU, including one individual title.
