Stallings Wins Greenbrier
In Three-Player Playoff
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.VA. | There
would be no final-round 59 for a second straight
year in the Greenbrier Classic, just a riveting
finish in regulation and a three-man playoff
that ended with rookie Scott Stallings making a
seven-foot birdie putt at the 162-yard 18th hole.
That final stroke of brilliance, as well as a
five-footer for birdie at 18 to get into the playoff,
was just enough to defeat Bob Estes and Bill
Haas at the rough and toughened up Old White
course for the first victory of Stallings’
PGA Tour career.
In the year after Stuart
Appleby posted a 59 in the last
round of the inaugural Classic in
2010 and prevailed with
a 22-under total of 258,
Old White underwent
an extensive renova-
tion, with new grass on
18 greens, another 250 yards
in length and much more difficult
rough all around.
This time, the degree of difficulty
was evident in the final 72-hole score
posted by all three men – a 10-un-
der 270, 12 shots higher than the
previous year.
Stallings played the back nine
in 5-under 31, but his chances for
the outright victory dimmed when
a wayward drive at the 17th hit a
tree and caromed into a nearby
creek. He made bogey there
to drop a shot be-
hind Haas and Estes, already in the clubhouse,
but pushed into the playoff with a dramatic
9-iron shot to five feet at the 18th, followed by
the first of his two incredibly clutch finishing
putts.
