John Daly was a
ninth alternate and
unknown when he
won the 1991 PGA
Championship at
Crooked Stick.
#5 A DALY
SURPRISE
BY LEWINE MAIR
JOHN DALY CAME WITH BAGGAGE
but, back in the summer of 1991, not too
many of those who watched his knock-
out of a win in the PGA Championship at
Crooked Stick knew that the 25-year-old
was already a hard drinker. And that he
had parted company with wife No. 1 and
had a similarly truncated college career.
The connoisseurs cannot boast of
having picked Daly out during the practice
days at Crooked Stick because Daly did
not arrive until the small hours of Thurs-
day morning. Ninth alternate, he had set
out for Crooked Stick on the Wednesday
when he learned that he had moved up
to first reserve. According to some ac-
counts, he passed out in the back of the
car on the journey and left it to his fiancé,
Bettye Fulford, to do the driving.
