Lucas Glover
There must be something in the
water in Northern Ireland. Maybe
it’s whisky. First, they herald back-
to-back U.S. Open champions in
Graeme McDowell and Rory McIl-
roy. And now Darren Clarke is lead-
ing the Proper Open (lighten up,
America!). He shares it with Lucas
“Fear the Beard” Glover, the 2009
U.S. Open champion and an Ameri-
can Werewolf in Sandwich. “They
said nobody has won the Open
with a beard since the 1890s,”
Glover said. So take a shave, buddy.
Clarke was in a chipper mood. “It
would mean an awful lot to win the
Open,” he said. “Chubby (Chandler,
his manager) has always said that
I have always played better fat. So,
I’ve obviously been adhering to that
theory.” So Fear the Belly, as well
then. Young Tom and Old Tom went
out on the links together again.
Not the Morris boys but Watson
and Lewis. Young Tom added a 74
to his first round 65. Old Tom shot
par and made a hole-in-one. A
20-year-old and 61-year-old can
still win the Open. The world No. 1
and No. 2 can’t. Luke Donald and
Lee Westwood missed the cut and
were last seen crying into their fish
and chips on the beach. So much
for an English resurgence in Kent.
Pack up the bunting. Fly the flag of
St George at half-mast. Cancel the
street parties. No one has men-
tioned Rory McIlroy for two days.
He’s level par. Northern Ireland
theme, anyone? A
