Levet Is Le Champion At Le Golf
PARIS | Frenchman Thomas Levet thrilled the
adoring throngs at Le Golf National Sunday
with a one-shot victory at the Alstom Open de
France over Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen and
England’s Mark Foster.
It was the 42-year-old veteran’s sixth European Tour victory and it set off a wild celebratory scene next to the 18th green where the
champagne flowed like water.
“Just crazy,” said Levet, who parred the 72nd
hole and won when playing partner Olesen
missed a short par putt that would have prompt-
ed a playoff. “If you’ve ever been to a Ryder
Cup, this is what it is like. The crowd was going,
‘Allez, allez, allez.’ I felt like one of the riders
climbing the mountains in the Tour de France.”
Levet’s winning total was 7 under. Foster be-
gan the day tied for the lead but stumbled with
a double-bogey on 12 and a bogey on 13.
It was the second week in a row Foster entered
the last round with at least a share of the lead.
Two Sundays ago, in Germany, he finished third.
“The way it went today was like a dream,”
said former Ryder Cupper Levet, who
birdied 14 for a share of the lead and
retained it with a 10-foot par
save on the 17th. “I knew
I was three behind
at one point but that’s nothing on this course.
