minutes later, Begay signed for a 3-under
69, which left him outside the top 10.
On Friday, eight former Open Championship winners, including defending He’s
the longestchampion Paul Lawrie, missed
the even-par cut of 144.
Saturday, David Duval shrugged off a
bad back, fired a 66 and moved into a tie
for second with Thomas Bjorn, six back
of Woods.
All this was a warmup act.
Woods’ victory that week was his 27th
in 102 starts as a professional. He became
the sixth man to win both the U.S. and British Opens in the same year, joining the fast
company of Bobby Jones (1926 and 1930),
Gene Sarazen (1932), Ben Hogan (1953),
Lee Trevino (1971), and Watson (1982).
