Hair Of The Dog
If it wasn’t for Scotland’s scruffy tennis
star Andy Murray, you could make a compelling argument that Tiger Woods’ new
facial hair arrangement is the worst in all
of sport. But we digress.
The Ugliest American, if you read the
dispatches from France last week, was
Bubba Watson, who while egressing from
Le Golf National after missing the cut,
whined a little too much for the tender egos
of the locals. Gall in Gaul? Maybe you had
to be there.
Maybe you would rather have been there
Sunday when the champagne corks started
popping milliseconds after laser-eyed
Frenchman Thomas Levet captured the
Alstom Open de France. “Crazy,” said Levet.
Levet wasn’t the only winner Sunday with
a penetrating stare. Hyper-focused American Nick Watney sizzled to a final-round 66
at the AT&T National after torching vaunted
Aronimink with a back-nine 27 Saturday.
Nice bookend win to go with the WGC title
that Watney captured at Doral in March.
Meanwhile, Rickie Fowler, a 54-hole co-leader, will have to wait at least one more
week to be hailed as the next Rory McIlroy,
who, oddly enough, was seen hanging out at
Wimbledon with … yes … Andy Murray.
Meanwhile, back at Camp Woods:
Nobody will be Fearing The Beard anytime
soon. At least not until he and his doctors
figure out what’s best, long term, for his
ravaged left knee. If Tiger drags himself
to the Open Championship next week, you
might want to look the other way.
