Kelly Miller Captures
C.B. Macdonald Invitational
Kelly Miller won the 100th C.B. Macdonald
Invitational at the famed National Golf Links
of America. Miller, seeded 12th in the Championship flight after a qualifying score of 74,
defeated Michael Stevens, Sands Chipman and
Ed Gibstein to gain the finals.
Miller beat John Marisco 1-up to win the
title Sunday afternoon. Bill Jackson downed
Chris Lange, 5 and 4, to claim the Senior
Championship.
The tournament was played at the famed
Macdonald design that abuts Shinnecock Hills
Golf Club on Long Island. The club, which
hosted the inaugural Walker Cup in 1922, will
again host this international competition in
2013.
AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP DRIVES WAGR
Performances in the Amateur Championship at Hillside Golf Club heavily influenced this
week’s World Amateur Golf Ranking.
Bryden Macpherson became only the second
Australian to win the Amateur in its 116-year
history when he defeated Scotland’s Michael
Stewart, 3 and 2. The affable Australian vaulted
up the world rankings, moving 152 spots into
the world top 50 at No. 42. Stewart’s reward for
finishing runner-up was a move to the 12th spot
from 24th.
Quarterfinalist Tom Lewis also moved
into the top 20. The English amateur lost, 4
and 3, to Stewart, but moved five places to
No. 16. England’s Andrew Sullivan moved up
three places to become the world’s 10th best
amateur and top-ranked European. American
Patrick Cantlay, low amateur at the U.S. Open,
continues to hold down the top spot in the
rankings.
AUSTIN CODY TAKES RICE PLANTERS
Duke sophomore Austin Cody fired an
18-under 270 to claim medalist honors at the
Rice Planters Amateur. Cody posted rounds
of 69-69-65-67 to secure a one shot victory at
Snee Farm Country Club in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
Cody found himself four shots off the lead
at the midway point of the tournament after
recording 69s in the first and second rounds.
He charged into the lead with a 7-under 65 in
the third round and held off several challengers with a 5-under 67 in the final round. Ryan
Heisey and Rafael Becker tied for second at
17-under 271.
MCCUMBER CLAIMS FLORIDA AMATEUR TITLE
The University of Florida’s Tyler McCumber
won the Florida State Amateur Championship
by carding a tournament total of 1-under-par
285 at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa in Miami.
In the first round, McCumber posted a
2-over-par 72 on the Jim McLean Course, and
followed up with a second-round, 2-over 74 on
the TPC Blue Monster Course to sit at 4-over
par for the championship heading into the
weekend.
McCumber moved up the leaderboard in
the third round with a 4-under 68 to trail by two
heading into the final round. His 1-under 71
gave him a win by a shot over Kevin Aylwin, Ben
