won the Southeastern Ama-
teur at the Country Club
of Columbus in Georgia.
Reeves shot 6-under-par
278 to beat Sepp Straka by
three shots. Reeves, who
finished 12th here a year
ago, carded three sub-70
rounds before posting a

Emiliano Grillo took a
chance on the U.S. Open
but it didn’t work out as
Seth Reeves
final-round 74. He opened with a 68, and led
or held a share of the lead for the remainder
of the 72-hole event, played on a 1925 Donald
Ross-designed course.
Straka was the only player to put any
pressure on Reeves, closing to within a shot
after three front-nine birdies. A bogey-bogey-
double-bogey sequence on holes 11-13 ended
his chances.
Keith Mitchell finished solo third at 2-under
par, while Jordan Walor and Brad Smith fin-
ished at 1 under. They were the only players in
the 96-man field to finish under par. Two-time
defending champion Derek Chang finished T6
at even par 284.

Buckley won the prestigious Hochster Memo-
hoped. A member of the field of the Monroe
Invitational, Argentinean Grillo found himself
as first alternate at Congressional. He with-
drew and left Rochester for Congressional to
wait. Unfortunately, no one dropped out, and
Grillo did not get in the Open field ... Little Mill
CC’s Michael Hyland eked out a 1-up vic-
tory over Stephen Hudacek from Glenmaura
National GC to win the 111th Philadelphia
Amateur Championship in a 36-hole match at
Manufacturers G&CC. Hyland, 32, previously
won this title in 2000. He turned pro shortly
thereafter but was recently reinstated ... 2008
Texas Amateur champion Kelly Kraft won the
title for the second time. Kraft shot 3-under-par
285 to beat third-round leader Garrett Driver by
a shot at historic Austin CC ... Wofford College
junior Mark Joye defeated University of South
Carolina-Upstate sophomore Adam Goins 3 and
2, to win his first Carolinas GA championship
title ... 20 year-old Harold Varner, of Gastonia,
fired the day’s low round of 66 for a 274 total to
win the North Carolina Amateur Championship
at Greensboro Country Club’s Farm Course.
Varner becomes the first male African-American
to claim a CGA championship.
