‘BEAR’ THOUGHTS
Jack Nicklaus
thinks
the rules of golf have
become too complicat-
ed, is happy these days
when he breaks 80 and
said his playing career
was basically over at age 40.
These were among a wide-
range of topics he touched
upon during a 23-minute
phone interview Wednesday
with Golf Channel Morning
Drive hosts
Erik Kuselias
and
Gary Williams
.
Asked if he would change
any rules, Nicklaus said:
“Probably the whole book
should be changed. A USGA
rules official said that it was
much more difficult to pass
the rules test than the bar
exam. The game should be
simple.” Of his game: “I don’t
ever hit balls. If I break 80,
I am doing very well. I don’t
think I have played a complete
round since I finished at St.
Andrews in 2005.” On his
record 18 majors: “Eighteen
was just the number I hap-
pened to end up at. I caught
lightning in a bottle at the ’86
Masters, but for all intents and
purposes, my career was over
at 40. I never really worked at
it like I should have.”

WHERE’S THE BEEF?
Look for shares of donut

devotees,
Phil Mickelson
, is
no longer a strict vegetarian,
a diet he adopted last year to
combat psoriatic arthritis.
“I was a strict vegetarian
for five months, but, ulti-
mately, it was doomed to fail,”
he said last week. “I’m trying
to have a better balance now
than instead of all protein. But
as far as the arthritis, that’s
something that will never go
away, but I was fortunate be-
cause I got on it right away.”
