For those who think Louis Oosthuizen’s
overtime victory in Sunday’s Africa Open
was “validation” for his Open Championship win last summer, we say “rubbish.”
When you spread-eagle the field at St.
Andrews by seven shots, that’s validation
enough. What this one really showed is he’s
not going away any time soon.
In Hawaii, indefatigable Graeme McDowell, the hottest player on the planet, almost
reeled in eventual winner Jonathan Byrd
at Kapalua with a closing 62, good for third
place. Also impossible to ignore was runner-up Robert Garrigus, the longest driver
with the shortest putter in the history of the
game. Byrd won when Garrigus missed a
tiddler on the second extra hole.
Meanwhile, for you tabloidists, Natalie
Gulbis has confirmed she is dating Dustin
Johnson, a Beauty and the Beast revelation that set the Twitterverse on fire and
generated more bad punch lines than
amateur night at the Comedy Club in East
Liverpool, Ohio.
Meanwhile II: Colin Montgomerie may
be a better captain than he ever was a
player. Monty’s Euros won the Royal Trophy
in Thailand on Sunday by storming back in
the singles to defeat Asia.
And finally, the Post’s Lewine Mair sat
with Euro boss George O’Grady for a wide-ranging chat in which O’Grady said he
wouldn’t be averse to changes in the Ryder
Cup format. Once upon a time that would
have been considered heresy. But, hey,
once upon a time an American was ranked
No. 1 in the world.
