More ‘Phil’ Putters To Market ( 5)
How else would you describe, in three
words or less, the odd couple of Yank Dustin
Johnson and Brit Ian Poulter teaming to win
the Shark Shootout in Florida on Sunday?
Right about now, of course, the cynics
are wagging their tongues and pointing out
the only way an American was going to win
a team event anyway this year was to
partner up with a European.
And how about the stunning revelation
that wily captain Colin Montgomerie snuck
extra-long beds for his players into the team
hotel at the Ryder Cup in Wales? Brilliant.
Next thing you know, losing captain Corey
Pavin will confess that the reason Hunter
Mahan chunked that crucial chip against
Graeme McDowell was because vice
captain Sergio Garcia snuck into Mahan’s
room Saturday and short-sheeted him.
Meanwhile in South Africa, Spaniard
Pablo Martin got a head start in the 2011
Race To Dubai by winning the the Alfred
Dunhill Championship. The European Tour,
you may remember, is the one where the
new season actually begins three weeks
before the old calendar year ends. If Martin wins in Durban this week, he will have
triumphed twice in 2011 before most of us
finished our 2010 holiday gift shopping.
And, please, no cheap jokes about a win-less Tiger Woods finding coal in his stocking.
Finally, for the man or woman who has
everything, there’s always a golf trip to Fiji.
