“We’ve been playing some good
golf together, winning The Pres-
idents Cup.”
This is all going to end in
tears for someone.
THIS COULD GET BOOZY
...
(if the Americans can be
coaxed away from their Ping-
Pong table). The formal victory
dinner has long been discarded.
Far too stuffy and painful – for
half of those in the ballroom,
at least. Now it’s dress-down
Sunday with beer, buffet (eat-
ing appears to be optional) and
karaoke with the more sociable
flitting between team rooms like
naughty schoolboys in adjacent
dormitories.
At the K Club near Dublin
in 2008, Mickelson began the
evening playing Ping-Pong with
Woods in the U.S. team room.
He ended it standing on a table
with the Europeans singing “Ole,
ole-ole-ole, ole, ole.”
“After it’s over
you have a beer
with everyone.”
– Corey Pavin
Mickelson smiled when he
was reminded of this entente
cordiale.
“There is not that same
hostility that there was a few
decades ago when the players
didn’t know each other,” he said.
“We are all good friends now. One
of my favorite guys is Padraig
Harrington. There is no nicer or
classier guy than Padraig.”
Maybe that’s why Monty
picked the Dubliner. But the
feeling is mutual.
“Playing in the States this
past year I’ve become mates with
Hunter Mahan, Dustin Johnson
and Rickie Fowler,” McIlroy said.
“We want to win. And they want
to win, but we’ll have a party
with them on Sunday night what-
ever the result. That’s what the
Ryder Cup is all about. We all get
on well. This Ryder Cup will be
played in good spirits.”
And, no doubt, the spirits that
come will be poured in large
glasses, too.
Captain Pavin said he is ready
to drink to that. So perhaps all his
serious talk in press conferenc-
es of late is just his poker face.
Chat to him in smaller, informal
groups and the real Pavin shows
his hand. He’s not such a win-at-
all-costs hard nut after all. Win
or lose in Wales, Pavin plans to
party with the Europeans.
