On the left side of the pond, the PGA Tour
went dark as it gathered its energies for the
much-hoped-for drama its mahouts pray will
unfold at The Tour Championship this week in
Atlanta where the tirelessly hyped FedEx Cup
Playoffs will hurtle to their conclusion while
Tiger Woods, a non-qualifier, pounds range
balls at home in Florida.
Yawn.
Meanwhile, in Europe a little-known
Spaniard, last name of Lara, won a lightly
attended Austrian event while most of Colin
Montgomerie’s big guns stayed home and
geared up for the Ryder Cup that begins a
week from Friday in Wales.
Ah, yes. The Ryder Cup.
We now know that Montgomerie’s team
room at Celtic Manor will be sound-proofed.
We know that Welsh entrepreneurs are mar-
keting a new beer called “Tiger Would.”
We also know that, as the matches draw
near, we shouldn’t look to Yank captain Corey
Pavin for any penetrating insights. “The object
is to get more points than the other team at
the end of the competition,” was the most
interesting thing Pavin had to say during a
conference call last Friday.
Meanwhile, Woods was actually “tweeting”
last week. And Euro officials are said to be ter-
rified that whoever possesses those “pictures”
of Monty (reputed to have caught him in the
act of uncaptainlike activities) will ignore the
injunctions and soon flood the Internet.
When it comes to the Ryder Cup, it’s never
too quiet.
