To Worse
Not that there isn’t an industrial-
strength, dirty laundry bag full of reasons
why Tiger Woods’ golf game has gone
into the hamper. But actually watching it
descend to new depths for four straight
days is hard to describe.
That, of course, won’t stop his growing
army of critics from trying.
After all, this was more than just Pava-
rotti missing the high “C.” It was Houdini
locking himself out of his own house. It was
Michelangelo falling off the scaffold. It was
Shakespeare splitting all his infinitives.
Watching Tiger Woods play golf like
James Woods last week was, in a word,
shocking. Unless, of course, you are so
deep in denial you can’t see the tight
Firestone fairways for the trees.
“It doesn’t surprise me at all,” Woods
said Sunday in Ohio after chopping his
way to a 72-hole total of 18-over-par 298
at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.
What’s next for the unsurprised
Woods is anybody’s guess and there is
precious little time for answers. The PGA
Championship, the season’s final major,
begins Thursday in Wisconsin.
Meanwhile, the detour Phil Mickelson
took Sunday to avoid witnessing Woods’
wreckage was so wide that he got lost
again, too. Lefty soared to an ugly 41
on his outward half and squandered yet
another chance to pass Woods at the top
of the world rankings.
There’s a cynic’s punchline here some-
where. But none of this is very funny right
now to Nos. 1 and 2.
