Johnson has been volunteering with the Spe-
cial Olympics of North Carolina for seven years.
All told, he has given more than 1,000 hours of
his time and created his own junior event. The
Drew Johnson Kids That Care junior golf event
has raised more than $23,000 for the Greensboro
Special Olympics Golf Team. With the money he
raised, the team can afford to travel to the North
Carolina State Games.
“I have always felt that getting involved in
helping others is an important thing,” Johnson
said. “All of us have a responsibility to give back
in some way.”
Calamaro found a way to tie volunteerism with
playing golf. In April, she organized a golf-a-thon
where she and a high school teammate played
102 holes of golf, securing donations for The First
Tee of Philadelphia that totaled more than $7,400.
While approximately 10 hours were spent on
the course, Calamaro spent much more time
organizing the event. Through passing out fliers
and alerting local media, she was able to secure a
substantial number of donations. Her project was
such a great success that it is now the recom-
mended senior project for all future captains of
the Radnor High School golf team.
“It’s such an honor to receive this award,”
said Calamaro, who has signed a letter of intent
with the University of Illinois. “It’s probably bet-
ter than any golf accomplishment I could have
ever achieved.”
When the Rolex Tournament of Champions
rolls around today, keep an eye out for these two
champions, both on and off the course. l
Two earn Rolex exemptions through off-course achievements
An invitation to a tournament is a milestone
for all junior golfers, let alone to the Rolex Tour-
nament of Champions. It is the American Junior
Golf Association’s flagship championship and the
field has featured the world’s best since 1978.
