Former USC Trojan Jamie
Lovemark made eagle-three on
the first playoff
hole Sunday to
beat B.J. Staten
at the $600,000
Nationwide Tour
Mexico Open
Bicentenary at El
Bosque Country
Club.
Lovemark shot 4-under 68 to
finish with a total of 12-under 276,
which Staten tied with two birdies
on his final three holes. The pair
then went back to the par- 5 18th for
the playoff.
It was Lovemark’s first Nation-
wide Tour victory after finishing
third twice and tied for second
earlier this season.
Lovemark, the 2007 individual
NCAA champion, made birdie-three
on No. 16 after two back-nine bo-
geys for his regulation 276. Then he
waited as Staten and Efren Serna Jr.
tried to close on that score.
Serna, from Mexico, tied Love-
mark for the lead after No. 17, but
bogeyed the par- 5 18th hole. He
finished with bogeys on two of his
final three holes to miss a chance to
win in his home country.
Lovemark began the weekend
in the No. 10 position on the Na-
Jamie Lovemark
tionwide Tour money list, and took
home $117,000 for his victory.
Second-round leaders Staten
and Peter Tomasulo also were tied
for the lead after three rounds at
9-under-par 207. Seven golfers
were grouped together one shot
back after Saturday – Lovemark,
Serna, Jeff Brehaut, J.J. Killeen,
Doug LaBelle II, Hugo Leon and
Madalitso Muthiya.
The Nationwide Tour is off next
week, but returns to play July 8-11
in Canada at the Wayne Gretzky
Classic. The $800,099 event is
played at the Georgian Bay Club
in Clarksburg, Ont., and the Ra-
ven Golf Club in Thornbury, Ont.
