GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY |
When
Lorena Ochoa retired earlier this year, it was
a foregone conclusion that she’d be replaced
quickly as the No. 1 player in the world. Jiyai
Shin took that spot easily.
But no one would have believed that Shin
could be dethroned in such a short period of
time. Ai Miyazato of Japan took over the No. 1
spot in the Rolex rankings on the LPGA Tour
with her victory on Sunday in the ShopRite
LPGA Classic.
Miyazato assumed the top spot with her
fourth victory of the season, by a margin of
two shots over M.J. Hur. Miyazato turned 25 on
Saturday and celebrated with a 7-under 64 on
Sunday to win for the first time in the U.S. and
for the fifth time in her career. Her 54-hole total
was 16-under 197 at Seaview’s Bay Course.
