Is there a favorite in the house?
Here we are in the final days before
the U.S. Open and the best players in the
world are acting like they've got pebbles
in their sandals (which, mixing metaphors, can be a real burr in your saddle if
you're not a dark horse).
The No. 1-ranked player in the world,
Tiger Woods, can't find a fairway on the
course and can't find his life off of it.
The No. 2-ranked player in the world,
Phil Mickelson, is trying to convince us
that 2-irons are the way to attack Pebble
Beach off the tee. The last time they played
a U.S. Open in California (2008, Torrey
Pines) he tried to convince us he didn't
need a driver in his bag. Nobody bought
that either. He finished tied for 18th.
The No. 3-ranked player in the world
is Lee Westwood, who couldn't hold
the 54-hole lead at The Masters and
couldn't hold the 54-hole lead at The
Players, and couldn't hold a two-shot
lead midway through the final round of
the St. Jude Classic on Sunday in Memphis. Finally, on the fourth playoff hole,
he made a six-foot putt for his first win
in America in 12 years.
Give Westwood credit. Nobody made
a bigger check Sunday. But it wasn't
especially pretty and/or convincing.
So now it's on to Pebble. The favorite?
