TaylorMade is looking to make its
driver line more formidable with the
addition of a pair of new bombers – the
R9 SuperDeep TP (Tour Preferred) and
the Burner SuperFast TP.
Both are high-performance versions
of existing clubs that are geared to better
player. Both have sleek, black looks, and
both are being used extensively on the
pro tours. Jason Day played the SuperFast TP when he won his first PGA Tour
event, the HP Byron Nelson Championship in mid-May, while Y.E. Yang had a
SuperFast in his bag when he captured
the European Tour’s Volvo China Open in
April. And he joins a group currently using the club that includes Retief Goosen,
Rory Sabbatini and Mike Weir.
The SuperDeep made its first ap-
pearance on the PGA Tour this year
at the Zurich Classic, when
10 pros put it into
play, among them
Sergio Garcia.
According to Tom Olsasky, senior
director of product creation at TaylorMade, the R9 SuperDeep TP is targeted
for the low-handicap player who wants
lower spin and a mid-launch angle. It
features a 460cc clubhead with a “super
deep” face that has an overall height
equal to the USGA limit of 2.76 inches.
“We gave the head shape and size a
more traditional, compact look at ad-
dress as we moved the center of gravity
forward and created a lower moment of
inertia,” he says. “The idea is to in-
crease workability as we lessen spin.”
Olsasky explains that TaylorMade’s
Flight Control Technology, which allows
players to adjust the hosel into eight
positions, enhances SuperDeep’s per-
formance attributes. A pair of moveable
weight ports gives golfers greater op-
tions by allowing them to adjust swing
weight and position the center of gravity
in 56 locations, he says.
The Burner SuperFast features an
aerodynamic head shape, expansive
clubface and a slightly open align-
ment. According to Olsasky, the inner
side of the clubface incorporates the
equipment maker’s
Inverted Cone Tech-
nology to promote
faster ball speed on
off-center hits. And
SuperFast also utilizes
TaylorMade’s Dual Crown
technology, which lowers and
pulls back the center of gravity to
promote a higher launch angle and
less spin.
