Former major league
pitcher John Smoltz struck out
in his first attempt at qualifying
for this summer’s U.S. Open
at Pebble Beach. Smoltz shot
a 6-over 78 in local qualify-
ing last Monday at Marietta
(Ga.) Country Club. He wasn’t
alone. Jacksonville Jaguars
placekicker Josh Scobee and
Minnesota Vikings placekicker
Ryan Longwell also missed
wide right. Scobee shot 81
at Timuquana Country Club
in Jacksonville, Fla., while
Longwell posted an 83 at Me-
tro West Golf Club in Orlando.
Dallas Cowboys quarterback
Tony Romo’s local qualifier
is May 20 at The Honors Golf
Club of Dallas.
Masters champion Phil
Mickelson has committed to
play in Jack Nicklaus’ Memo-
rial Tournament, to be played
June 3-6. The reigning Masters
champion, ranked No. 2
in the world, skipped last
year’s tournament and doesn’t
have a great track record at
Muirfield Village Golf Club. In
11 appearances, he has two
top 10s, a T4 in 2006 and a T9
in 2002. Tim Clark, who won
The Players Championship,
also has committed to play the
Memorial as has Italian Mat-
teo Manassero and Northern
Ireland’s Rory McIlroy.

Captain Rosie Jones has
named Juli Inkster and Sherri
Steinhauer as assistant cap-
tains for the 2011 U.S. Solheim
Cup team. Inkster, a member
of the LPGA and World Golf
Halls of Fame, has played in
eight Solheim Cups, while
Steinhauer has competed in
four. The 2011 Solheim Cup
will be played at Killeen Castle
in County Meath, Ireland, Sept.
23-25.
Richard “Richie” Anderson,
70, a former Minnesota Se-
niors champion and Golfweek’s
Super Senior Player of the year
in 2008 and 2009, passed away
May 7. Anderson, who lived in
Minnesota and was a member
of Interlachen Country Club,
was diagnosed with brain can-
cer in mid-April.
Annika Sorenstam has
signed to design the Olivion
Golf Resort, in Belek, Turkey. It
will be her first course design
project in Europe and ninth
worldwide. Sorenstam and
Stan Eby, of European Golf
Design, have begun routing the
course. Construction is due to
start in spring 2011 and the
course will open in 2012.

UBS announced it will
continue as title sponsor of the
Hong Kong Open. The tourna-
ment, co-sanctioned by the
European Tour, Asian Tour and
Hong Kong Golf Association,
will be played at Hong Kong
Golf Club, Nov. 18-21.
Fred Couples heads a list of
24 major champions entered in
the 71st Senior PGA Champi-
onship, May 27-30, at Colorado
Golf Club, southeast of Denver.
Robert Allenby is now Aus-
tralia’s top-ranked male golfer,
rising to 12th after his runner-
up finish last week at The
Players Championship. Allenby
improved from 16th last week
and moved past long-standing
top Aussie Geoff Ogilvy, who
slipped from 14th to 15th. The
other Aussies ranked in the
world top 50 are Adam Scott
53rd and Michael Sim 48th. l
