Ben Hayes, playing in his first Walter J.
Travis Invitational, won the 100th playing
of one of the most storied amateur events
in the country. Hayes won the final match
Sunday afternoon, 3 and 2, over Jay Crow-
ley at Garden City Golf Club in Garden City,
N. Y., itself one of the most lauded courses
in the country.
Hayes, of Whisper Rock Club in Scott-
sdale, Ariz., and a former No. 1 on the
Southern California college golf team, got
to the final by beating his best friend and
college teammate Brad Shaw in the semifi-
nals on Sunday morning. Hayes beat Shaw,
of Los Angeles Country Club, 2 and 1. Shaw
was also a first-time Travis contestant.
Crowley’s road to the final went
through Garden City member Jed Raynor,
who was vying to be the first Garden City
member to win the Travis since 1970. But
Crowley dispatched Raynor, 4 and 3, in the
semifinals.
Raynor reached the semifinals with
a 1-up victory over Chuck Del Priore, of
Wykagyl Country Club, after beating Scott
Mackesy, 3 an 1, in the morning round on
Saturday. Crowley defeated T.J. Brudzin-
ski, of Worthington Hills (Ohio), 2-up in the
afternoon, after defeating Eoin O’Connor
in 20 holes.
To reach his semifinal, Shaw defeated
Eaoghan O’Connell, of the Fox Club in
Florida, 1-up. Hayes beat Tom Yellin, of
Connecticut’s Stanwich Club, 3 and 2, af-
ter beating Roger Hoit 2 and 1 in the round
of 16.

rounds of 67-70-66 to finish at 13-under
203 and edge Thomas Flory and Peter
Jacobi, from Virginia, by a single stroke.
Flory, of Madison, and Jacobi, of Arling-
ton, entered the final round tied for the
lead but finished second after a closing
67 landed them one shy of a playoff. First
and second-round leaders Jerry Jackson,
from Sarasota, Fla., and Bill Western,
from Aiken, S.C., fired a final-round 71 to
drop to third at 11-under 205.

his approach came up short and in the

MARSH AND BELL EARN WINS
AT CARLTON WOODS INVITATIONAL
Kevin Marsh, of Henderson, Nev.,
used a dramatic turnaround to win the
Mid-Amateur division of the Carlton
Woods Invitational at The Woodlands,
Tex. Entering the final round with the
lead, Marsh posted five bogeys in his
first nine holes to fall out of first and two
strokes behind Robbie Mc Williams, of
Bossier City, La. But Marsh’s back nine
was a different story. After a bogey on
10, Marsh birdied 11, 13, 15, 17 and 18 to
post a 71. His three rounds of 73-72-71
gave him a record-setting mark of level-

UNHERALDED DAVIS CAPTURES
ENGLISH WOMEN’S AMATEUR
Seventeen-year-old Hayley Davis won
the English Women’s Amateur champion-
ship on her first attempt as she defeated
Tara Watters by 2 and 1 at Broadstone
Saturday in her home county of Dorset.
Members of Davis’s own club, Fern-
down, were out in force to see how their
relatively unsung junior would fare in what
is arguably the strongest of the four na-
tional championships. After losing the first
hole to a Watters birdie, she drew level
when she caught the green at the seventh
with a couple of sumptuous woods, and
went ahead at the short eighth.
Four up after the 14th, she missed a
putt for the title at the 15th and, with Wat-
ters reacting by seizing the next couple of
holes, had to wait until the penultimate
hole to tie things up. She did as much with
an awkward little two-and-a-half footer,
which prompted the only nerves she had
felt all day. “It was so special to win in my
home county with everyone watching,”
she said amid her relief.
