If the eyes are the window to the soul,
you can’t help but sense that the picture
of Lorena Ochoa (left) is worth way more
than 1,000 words.
The world’s best female golfer
walked away from golf last week with
a smile on her face and peace in her
heart. As a player and an ambassador
to the game she always gave more than
she got. Now she is officially retired and
looking forward to living, in her words,
a “normal” life.
She was ours to enjoy, as a competi-
tor and a person, during her eight years
on the biggest stage in women’s golf.
Now her family and friends are getting
her back. We can hope for her return to
golf. But if you followed her career and
felt you knew her in even a small way,
you will hope, even more, for whatever’s
best for her.
Elsewhere in golf a little-known
Australian named Marcus Fraser won
a European Tour event played in South
Korea. Ernie Els, the player they call “The
Big Easy,” stumbled to a disappointing
final-round 74 and a tie for ninth.
Near New Orleans, the city they call
“The Big Easy,” a journeyman American
named Jason Bohn captured his second
PGA Tour victory on the day after his 37th
birthday.
All of which is a polite way of saying
there were no other stories in golf last
week that stole Lorena’s spotlight. And
that was a good thing.
