Nike’s golf division took a
big chance with a
Tiger Woods
commercial that was contro-
versial at worst and a prime
topic of conversation at best.
Woods did not speak during
the 33-second ad, looking stoi-
cally into the camera while the
voice of his late father provided
the audio. “I want to find out
what your thinking was,”
Earl
Woods
says. “I want to find out
what your feelings are. And

did you learn anything?” The
commercial, which triggered a
host of You Tube parodies, aired
on Golf Channel and ESPN
on Wednesday and Thursday
of Masters week and stopped
airing just before ESPN’s tele-
cast of the tournament’s first
round. The words from Earl
Woods were taken from “Tiger:
The Authorized DVD Collec-
tion” released in 2004. Ironi-
cally, Earl Woods was talking
about Tiger’s mother,
Kultida
.
His full quote from the collec-
tion was: “Authoritarian. Yea,
Tida is very authoritative. She
is very definitive. ‘Yes’ and ‘No.’
I am more prone to be inquisi-
tive, to promote discussion.
To the victor go the spoils,
and when you’re the Super
Bowl MVP, those spoils are
sweet. In March, New Orleans
Saints quarterback
Drew
Brees
played in The Honda
Classic pro-am with
Jack
Nicklaus
, and was invited
to play with another legend,
Arnold Palmer
, but had to
pass because he was over-
seas on his fifth USO tour.
He’s been invited to play in a
pro-am before the U.S. Open at
Pebble Beach in June, and will
host the Cox Communications
Championship charity tour-
nament in May in San Diego.
“This Super Bowl thing has its
perks,” Brees said.
Phil Mickelson
thanked
the oncologist who has been
treating his wife and mother by
inviting him inside the ropes to
caddie during the final round
of the Shell Houston Open.
Dr. Tom Buchholz
took over
for
Bones Mackay
on the 14th
tee, and what was supposed
to be a one-hole loop turned
into three as the duo teamed
to birdie three straight holes.
“Three great reads, three great
clubs,” Mickelson said. l
