While golf legends prepared for the final
round of The Masters, AJGA juniors in Texas
embarked on their own final-round dreams,
each trying to achieve their first AJGA win at the
Masters Course at Brookhaven Country Club in
Dallas.
Vincent Martino, of Southlake, Tex., main-
tained his two-stroke lead and posted a two-day
total of even-par 144 to take the Boys Division
honors. Martino posted four birdies on the day
and said his birdie on No. 15 was a defining mo-
ment in his round.
“I hit my driver right, directly underneath
the trees,” he said. “Then I hit it to six feet and
made birdie. I didn’t worry about my opponents
today, I just played against par.”
Closing in on Martino throughout the day
was Landon Kowalski, of Buffalo Grove, Ill., who
carded a tournament-low, 2-under-par 70, to
finish runner-up, two shots back.
In the Girls Division, co-medalists Alexandra
Wong, of San Francisco, and Haley Haught, of
Austin, Tex., recorded tournament totals of 158
to share the top spot. Wong, the leader after
the first round, struggled early in her round but
didn’t let it affect her game.
“I just took a deep breath,” Wong said. “I
didn’t come all the way to Texas just to throw
the tournament away. I just hung in there. All my
hard work really paid off.”
Haught was third at the start of the day and
looked to other big names for inspiration in the
final round.
“I had five strokes to make up and I knew I
could do it,” she said. “I actually thought about
Tiger. He has the same amount to make up today.”
Betty Chen, of Castro Valley, Calif., finished
in third at 15-over-par 159.
FORREST REIGNS IN
SCOTTISH BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP
Grant Forrest defeated Scotland teammate
Ian Redford 3-and- 2 in the finals of the Scottish
Boys Championship at West Kilbride GC Satur-
day. With the win, Forrest became only the sec-
ond player to hold the national U-16s – which
he won last year at Largs – and Scottish Boys
Championship titles since Colin Fraser turned
the feat in 1987-88. The match was evenly bal-
anced for most of the morning, until Forrest
made consecutive birdies on the 13th and 14th
and took a two-hole lead at the halfway stage.
Redford could not get his putter going in
the afternoon, missing several chances and
Forrest’s superb iron play kept the match in his
favour. He went 3-up at the 23rd with a par and
despite losing the 28th after he pulled his tee-
shot out of bounds, bounced back to take the
31st and 33rd holes, sandwiched by a Redford
birdie at the 32nd. A half in pars at the 34th was
good enough to give Forrest the win.
RAJENDRANATH WINS
CARIBBEAN JUNIOR
Trinidad and Tobago’s Talin Rajendranath
shot even-par 72 in the final round to capture
the Boys’ 16-17 title of the Republic Bank Carib-
bean Junior Open Friday at St Andrew’s GC in
Trinidad. He finished the 54-hole event at 5-over
221. T&T’s Brittany Marquez was the girls’ over-
all winner with a score of 25-over 241.l
