Spiderman,
Boom Boom
and a ‘Noh’ body
Along Came
The Spider
Could it be, for those who were
beginning to have doubts, that golf is
cool again?
Golf always was cool for the millions who have a passion for the game.
But this week the general sports
public got Camilo Villegas, a preternaturally limber Colombian with
matinee-idol looks, and Fred Couples,
a longtime fan darling, in two separate
winner’s circles.
Spiderman in Florida. Boom Boom
in California.
Meanwhile, in Malaysia an 18-year-
old Korean came up with a stirring
answer to the question: What part of
Noh do you not understand?
Noh Seung-yul dramatically birdied
the last hole from the wrong fairway
in Kuala Lumpur to beat his boyhood
hero, K.J. Choi, by a shot. The event
was co-sanctioned by the Euro and
Asia Tours. And it added Noh’s name
to the list that includes Rory, Ryo and
Matteo. There are, apparently, no laws
governing young gun control.
Nor are there any rules against
people shooting low scores. Tom Watson fired a 62 on the Champions Tour
and Karrie Webb (remember her?)
went one lower than that in Australia.
