fewer events from only two years
ago and three fewer than 2009.
The first event isn’t until Febru-
ary 18-21 in Thailand. The first
tournament on United States
soil isn’t until the LPGA Classic
Presented by J Golf March 25-28
at La Costa Resort & Spa in
Carlsbad, Calif.
Only 13 events will be held in
the United States, six of those
in a two-month stretch between
May 13 and July 11. The last
event in the sequence is the U.S.
Women’s Open at Oakmont
Country Club near Pittsburgh.
“We’ve got to play more and
in more places,” Whan said.
“The magic isn’t on display as
often as it needs to be. I’m not
saying anything you don’t know
or I don’t know. That’s squarely
on my shoulders.”
The demand for more golf,
especially in the United States,
is vital. It was a critical issue in
the insurgency that cost Bivens
her job.
To many, former commissioner Carolyn Bivens struggled to
balance the need for global growth with a strong presence in
the United States.
“The LPGA Tour is based in
America,” Paula Creamer said at
the Tour Championship. “I feel
that we need to have a lot of
events here. I feel it’s important
for women’s golf. However, I’m
very global with my sponsors
and I think it’s important to get
out in the world. Golf is grow-
ing. Golf is in the Olympics. We
do have to go overseas.”
One LPGA story that often
surfaces is the dominance of
Asian golfers and what impact
that has on the tour. Whan
recognizes the question before
it is completed because in a
short time he’s already heard it
frequently.
