Bubba Buckets Ball
From Rented House
to Phoenix, where the family’s RV was
parked. From there he drove four hours
to La Quinta, arriving Tuesday night.
Wednesday, without a practice round,
Bertsch had a 10-birdie, no-bogey 62 on
the Nicklaus course.

LA QUINTA, CALIF. |
Roy McAvoy, the
scraggly driving range pro portrayed
by Kevin Costner in the 1996 film “Tin
Cup,” had nothing on Bubba Watson,
the touring pro.
In the movie, McAvoy wins a bet
by hitting a ball out the window of a
clubhouse bar that causes a bird to
take off from a post. In real life, Wat-
son, hiding from the rain that forced a
postponement of Thursday’s scheduled
second round of the Bob Hope Classic,
smacked a few shots from his rented
home and posted links to the video on
his Twitter account (link).
“Hope the person I rented it from,”
said Watson, “doesn’t know I hit balls
from their house.”
The owner will, because the videos
can be viewed at tweetreel.com/?7d27h

There will be at least one Mickelson
(Phil) in this week’s Farmer’s Insurance
Open at Torrey Pines. There almost was
a second, Phil’s brother, Tim, golf coach
at the University of San Diego. But Tim
was beaten by a player from his own
team, 19-year-old junior Gunner Wiebe
in qualifying.
After playing to a tie over 22 holes,
18 regulation, four sudden death, in
the first amateur qualifier in Novem-
ber, Mickelson and Wiebe went back to
Torrey’s South Course, site of the U.S.
Open, and played another 18. Wiebe’s
seven-foot birdie on 18 gave him a 73,
one better than Mickelson. Gunnar
Wiebe is the son of Champions Tour
player Mark Wiebe.
able to come to the Hope and play.
“Some day, maybe, I can become a
good enough player in my own right
to be known as Sam Saunders first and
Arnold Palmer’s grandson second. Or
side by side. It doesn’t matter.”
“I had a crash and I had to make
a couple of decisions,” Fowler said. “I
picked golf.”
Shane Bertsch was off the Tour from
1997 through 2006. After returning, he
was affected by vertigo. Then he slipped
on stairs in 2008 and broke his right
foot. He regained eligibility by finishing
15th at the 2009 Q-School.
With RSM McGladrey in the fold to
sponsor a new Fall Series event at Sea
Island Resort in St. Simons Island, Ga.,
in early October, the PGA Tour’s 2010
schedule was finalized last week. The ad-
dition of the McGladrey Classic means
the tour will stage 46 tournaments,
including 41 FedEx Cup and five Fall
Series events.
