The 2010 European Tour is now
five events old and not one of its winners has reached his 30th birthday.
The latest victorious member of this
precocious gallery of flatbellies is a
25-year-old German named Martin
Kaymer. Kaymer, (left, in front of an
on-course billboard) playing in the
final threesome at Abu Dhabi with
Ian Poulter and 20-year-old Rory McIlroy, birdied the 72nd hole Sunday
at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club to defeat
Poulter by one and McIlroy by two.
It was Kaymer’s fifth victory on the
European Tour and, by all accounts of
veteran eyes, it presages many more.
Last summer, Kaymer injured his
right foot in a go-karting accident
and had to have metal plates inserted. Doctors told him recently they
are ready to remove the plates. Meanwhile, there’s no truth to the rumor
that scores of junior golfers around
the world are begging doctors to
insert metal plates into their feet.
