SEBRING, FLA. | Youth was served at
the weather-plagued 55th Harder Hall
Women’s Invitational as 16-year-old Kyle
Roig defeated her south Florida practice
partner and friend, 14-year-old Alexis
Thompson, in a one-hole playoff Saturday at Harder Hall Country Club.
Roig, a two-time Florida state high
school medalist from Pembroke Pines,
made short work of sudden-death. After
Thompson narrowly missed a 25-foot
birdie putt on first playoff hole, Roig
holed her putt from 18 feet to claim “my
biggest win so far.”
The final round was played in a steady
drizzle, gusty winds and hand-numbing
cold. Roig won despite calling a penalty
on herself on the par- 5 sixth hole when
she accidentally moved her ball a half-
inch with her putter.
“I couldn’t feel my putter, it was
so cold,” she explained. Tournament
organizers couldn’t recall a worse day in
the long, prestigious history of the event,
whose past champions include JoAnne
Carner, Christie Kerr, Natalie Gulbis and
Morgan Pressel.
Wake Forest senior Dolores White,
from nearby Lakeland, Fla., was the story
of the first three rounds, sharing or holding the lead outright. But on Sunday she
struggled to an 82 and finished tied for
ninth. Defending champion and third-round co-leader Candace Schepperle
shot 76 and finished third.
Thompson, playing in the next-to-last
group, appeared to take control when
she rolled in a long birdie putt from the
fringe on the par- 5 17th to move two
shots clear of playing partner Taylore
Karle and Roig, who was in the final
group. But from the middle of the 18th
fairway, Thompson pulled her approach
into a greenside bunker, where it buried
and resulted in a costly bogey.
Team Championship Thursday at The
Dye Preserve in Jupiter, Fla., for the second year in a row with a winning score of
19-under 197. Vinny Giles, of Richmond,
Va., and Trip Kuehne, of Dallas, Tex., finished runner-up, two shots behind. Mike
McCoy and George “Buddy” Marucci,
who shot a final-round 60, tied for third.
The National Senior-Junior is a 54-
hole event comprised of three different formats. The first round is four-ball
stroke-play, the second round a modified
alternate shot and the final round a
scramble. There is a Legends division in
which one member of the team must be
at least 65 years old. The winners for that
division were Mark Mulvoy, of Rye, N. Y.,
and David Brookerson, of Huntingdon
Valley, Pa. RESULTS
